Proviron (Mesterolone) is a dihydrotestosterone (DHT) derived anabolic androgenic steroid. Specifically it is a structurally altered DHT hormone possessing the addition of a methyl group at the carbon one position. This allows the hormone to survive oral ingestion by protecting it from hepatic breakdown. This is one of the only oral anabolic steroids that is not C17-alpha alkylated (C17-aa) but instead carries the added methyl group. Despite having an anabolic rating that is potentially greater than testosterone, Proviron will display very low anabolic traits. Proviron, while structurally very anabolic, the Mesterolone hormone converts and reduces to Diol metabolites, in turn reducing anabolic activity. Due to this Proviron is mostly used in addition to a cycle for its multiple other abilities. One such ability is its effect on reducing Sex-Hormone-Binding-Globulin (SHBG) making other steroids in the cycle more effective. Proviron also has the ability to bind to the aromatase enzyme in turn decreasing estrogenic activity during a cycle. The last noteworthy ability in the terms of bodybuiling would be its’ strong binding affinity to the androgen receptors in the body causing a pronounced hardening effect when the user is lower in body fat. Because of this Proviron is often used towards the end of a “cutting” phase to bring out a harder appearance.
